A few pelicans arrive at the break of day to feed on the fish caught in the lagoon. At the first glow of dawn, the silence is broken by the sounds of the feeding birds. Using vibrant and translucent acrylics, brushed and scraped onto the canvas, a loose, less exact impressionistic variant of the real-life image was created.

A flock of spoonbills stir up the shallows of the lagoon in the early morning. The birds, intent on disturbing the fish, swished and swirled the still water. Using a palette knife and strongly contrasting colours, the black tree reflections and light streaming in patches brought this scene to life.

The setting sun silhouettes the mangroves and casts an unusual mix of dark shadows and glowing yellow patches across the water. The reflections of the pontoon appear to leap out of the swirling waters of the incoming tide. A very limited palette of blues, darkest greys, and yellows allowed this scene to materialize.

From the lookout at sunset, the western landscape was bathed in a bright glow. The naked branches of the gum trees lit up in the most unusual colours. The palette used was determined by the dusky bushland in the background and these branches layered in flickering bright light and shadows. Being careful with tones and colours, I used big brushes, palette knives and scrapers to simplify the shapes in the background rather than focus on any details. It was not until the screen formed by the pink-orange branches were painted, did I see the landscape recede as I had intended.
