SHERYL FAINGES

Hi, my name is Sheryl Fainges and I am a local Brisbane artist. I have recently become a semi-retired teacher and as a result, I now have the time to explore my love of ART.

It has been over 15 years since I last held a brush and painted in oils. Now, I have turned my hand to painting in acrylics using a palette knife only. I recently attended a weekend workshop held by the Brisbane Institute of Art and this gave me the confidence to step out using this technique.

I have always studied art. During my initial teacher education training, I studied sculpture and later I received a Graduate Diploma in Visual Arts from Griffith University. Over the years, I have enjoyed studying under various local artists in the Bayside area.

I love all aspects of art and hopefully during my teaching career, I have been able to install a love of art into my primary school students.

Palette Knife Art

This year, I have turned my hand to painting in acrylics and using the palette knife only (even my signature is written with the palette knife). I love the freedom of expression and texture provided by the palette knife. Every painting is unique. Colour blending is left largely to the palette knife, which allows me to explore the developing picture as the knife creates a unique flow of colour within the subject matter.

Although, painting with a palette knife allows for freedom of expression, I find myself still striving for an element of reality within my composition.

I enjoy painting a wide variety of subject matter as each brings with it a new learning curve.
