Ceramic Sculptures

About the Artist (click to expand)

Liz Izquierdo

I loved nature since I was a child and that guided my decision to study biology at the university and I was trained as a scientist.

Lived in Venezuela, Mexico and Sweden and came to Australia many years ago. Being exposed to diverse cultures have shaped my perception of the world, built my personal story and influenced my ceramic work which is always evolving.

It all started in 2000 when I took a 6-week hand built ceramics short course through the Adult Learning Courses program and was hooked. After that, I became a self-educated ceramist through reading books on the topic combined with weekly evening classes and workshops. Eventually, I was able to set up a small studio in my apartment's garage.

I am naturally an adventurer and a learner. Consequently, I love to experiment with diverse medium, techniques, forms, textures and colour in my pieces.

My artworks can be handbuilt or wheel thrown. One of the techniques I love dearly is Raku, an ancient low-temperature firing Japanese technique that involves removing the piece from the kiln when it is still glowing hot. It’s ideal for metallic glazes and can produce amazing results.

When I am working in ceramics I lose track of time and it’s like meditating. Another reason I love it.

Below is a selection of my sculptures which are for sale. My pieces are either handbuilt or wheel thrown. One of the techniques I love deadly is Raku, an ancient low-temperature firing Japanese technique that involves removing the piece from the kiln when it is still glowing hot. It’s ideal for metallic glazes and can produce amazing results.
