Inspiration for Art

I get so much pleasure and nourishment from our natural world. My connection to Nature inspires me to paint the forests, the mountains, deserts, beaches, rivers and waterfalls. The natural world is a rich source that influences the mood of my works, which can be sometimes delightful and peaceful, at other times awesome, brutal or even strangely fanciful.

My Progression

As a young woman I followed my instincts and graduated with an honours degree in environmental geography. I think that my art practice benefits from a deep understanding of natural processes. In some way the science of landforms and biogeography insinuates itself into my paintings. Now in relaxed retirement, my time is spent photographing and painting the terrain, natural vegetation and wildlife.  

I like to energise my paintings by including people or animals in landscapes. Consequently, my interest in portrait and figure painting has developed a great deal. It’s challenging but satisfying. Although I have no formal art qualifications, I like nothing more than observing and experimenting. I have learnt from good teachers and other artists in workshops,such as at ArtEscape in Cairns (2017), Camp Creative in Bellingen (2018 and 2019), and the McGregor Winter School in Toowoomba (2019).

Happy Endings

I like to explore the play of water and light on surfaces, shapes and shadows, and the colours of Australia. My palette always includes Cerulean Blue, Payne’s Grey, Naples Yellow and Transparent Red Oxide. You will find these somewhere in most of my paintings, and in this photo taken on the WA coast, one of my ‘happy places’.

I paint in oils and acrylics, and prefer medium-sized to small pictures, which suit the home. As a member of the ART ST group, I have found a comfortable space in which to develop as an artist.
