About the Artist (click to expand)
Brisbane is my hometown, and I love its luscious and languid subtropical pace. Still, I do travel a lot. It has been my great fortune, at different times, to call other places ‘home’ - Townsville, Auckland, Paris, Nantes, Amman and Abu Dhabi. But it is when I return to Brisbane, that I feel most comfortable and ready to paint.
Nature is my great inspiration. While I draw inspiration from my experiences abroad and poking around in the world’s great galleries, mostly my subjects are drawn from the diverse and wonderful Australian environment. In 2018 I travelled the length and breadth of our country from Broome to Kangaroo Island, via Darwin and Brisbane (the long way around!).
Formally trained as a geographer, I know a bit about landforms, geology and native flora in a ‘scientific’ sense. However, it is the aesthetics of the composition, the play of water and light in the landscape, that puts soul into a picture. That’s what I seek. Lately I have tried my hand at figure painting and portraiture, and I try to suggest a story by peopling an interesting landscape. Although challenging, it is a very satisfying approach.
I have loved drawing and painting since childhood. Essentially I am a self-taught hobbyist with a long-held dream of becoming an artist. Since retirement 3 years ago, I have the time to explore broader possibilities. That is why I have joined the ART ST collective, a place for emerging artists to gain exposure. Also, I have enjoyed and learnt a great deal in workshops, such as at ArtEscape in Cairns under the expert tutelage of Anneke Silver and Camp Creative in Bellingen with the talented Julie Hutchings. These opportunities introduced me to the fun of playing around with mixed media.
I like to paint medium-sized to small pictures, which suit a domestic setting, rather than large works. My preferred medium is oil, and recently I have been using acrylics to good effect. Please have a browse. Let me know if you find something which appeals or if you would like to commission a painting.
