ART ST News for November and December 2014
I’m excitedly looking forward to 2015 to discover what it brings and am looking forward to continuing to promote Brisbane’s emerging artists.
ART ST Exhibits
Together with Catherine Marsh and Grazia Carrara, we organized our first exhibition "Journey to Europe" which was a tremendous experience and opportunity to learn how to organize an exhibition. The opening night was a huge success with people queued up outside the gallery waiting for their turn to view the works!
The entire experience will stand us in good stead for future group Art St Exhibitions and I will endeavour to ensure future exhibitions do not coincide with any major event (e.g G20), the heat of summer or anything else which may keep prospective art collectors away.
Around the same time as "Journey to Europe", Di Cox had a stall at a Mt Coot-tha pop-up exhibition which was organized by the Watercolour Society of Queensland.
Over the last couple of months, Patt Gonzalez set up a permanent stall at the weekend Boundary St Markets, West End. You can see her lovely art there and say hello!
Jakki’s Boucaut's “Endless Summer” exhibition which was held at Wild Canary Bistro ran for almost two months and was a huge success. Congratulations to Jakki! She worked exceptionally hard and it was lovely to see the hard work rewarded.
I am excited to announce that we will be holding a group exhibition at Percolator Gallery in September. The theme of the exhibition is “Brisbane – Hidden in Plain Sight” (hidden gems - places and spaces that we might walk past every day and not notice).
Our monthly painting group will be heading "en plein air" this year and we will be looking for Brisbane's hidden gems. If you see a group of artists somewhere on the last Friday of the month - it could be us!
What's new on our website
Before Christmas I created a new page on our website - “Original Art under $200” and placed all art under that amount onto it. So, if you are looking for a smaller original painting and don't want to pay too much, have a look at what we have available here!
Anniversaries and New Artists @ ART ST
ART ST has much pleasure in welcoming Deb Brown to our group. Deb is a versatile artist with a variety of subjects in oil, acrylic, ink and mixed media.
Congratulations to Christian Mapes, Jakki Boucaut and Ros Howse who recently celebrated their first anniversaries with ART ST.
Art Sales
We've received lots of sales over the last couple of months from people who have found us through Google (current best-ranking search term is "Brisbane Artists"), Facebook, word of mouth and returning customers.
Congratulations to Anne Armstrong, Ros Howse and Karen Collins (that's me!) for your recent sales and associated commissions.
Requests for Art
Over the last few months we have receive three "Requests for Art".
In August, for November completion, we were asked for a Brisbane River/Story Bridge painting. Thanks to Ros Howse, Anne Armstrong and Di Cox for participating in this. Unfortunately, this didn’t result in a sale, however, the paintings are now are available for sale to the public. Please click the images for further details.
In November, for December completion, the request was for "Pelicans on the Brisbane River". Ros, Di and I (Karen Collins) created paintings in response. Thanks very much Ros and Di for your involvement and for creating some beautiful paintings. Unfortunately, again, it didn’t end with a sale, but it was great to see Di dust off her acrylic paints and produce some great images! She is a fabulous watercolour artists and is now showing her versatility in acrylics. Please click the images below for further details.
Currently we have a request in for a “Hilly/Mountain Rural Scene” which makes a nice change from Brisbane images! A few of our artists are participating in this one which is due on 2 February. I'm looking forward to seeing the different styles and images our artists can come up with. Whether a painting sells to the person making the request or not, it is a fabulous exercise for our Artists and encourages them to paint something they may not have thought about painting in the past. They may discover new and exciting subjects that they love painting. Click here for further details of this "Request for Art".
Instagram & Pinterest
Since starting Instagram and Pinterest back in October, we now have 46 followers on Instagram, but not much is happening with Pinterest. Therefore I shall concentrate efforts on Instagram!

Well, that just about wraps up the last few months on Art St. The next news update will be in March.
Take care and all the best for a happy and healthy 2015!
Karen Collins
Well it seems that this time of the year is Exhibition Season in Brisbane and five of ART ST's Artists have been busily preparing to exhibit and hoping that paintings will dry in time to hang.
Grazia Carrara, Catherine Marsh and I (Karen Collins) have our "Journey to Europe" (previously "Memories of Europe" - we thought the new title was more inclusive and that more people might want to journey to Europe than they would share the memories of artists they may not even know very well, if at all!). Preparations are coming along well and the invitations have been sent. Please let us know if you would like one sent to you!
Mary Brimblecombe is exhibiting with some of her artists friends at the School of Arts Hall, Wynnum Rd, Morningside and Jakki Boucaut was approached by the Brookfield Garden Centre and asked to exhibit in their beautiful bistro.
Details of all three exhibitions can be found on our "Art Exhibitions" page.
The G20 will coincide with all three exhibitions and we have the special G20 long weekend right in the midst of it. When I first discovered the dates for the G20 I was quite upset, thinking that everyone would be heading out of Brisbane to escape the madness. However, there's no point in being upset with things one cannot change. The other side of the coin is that there is supposed to be a lot of people coming to Brisbane. Hopefully these people will be interested in art. Imagine Italy's president Giorgio Napolitano buying one of Grazia or Catherine's gorgeous Italian landscapes!
Anniversaries and New Artists @ ART ST
ART ST has much pleasure in welcoming Marianne Grigore, Di Cox, Kip Spiegle and Robert to our group.
Congratulations to Grazia Carrara, Catherine Marsh, and Anne Armstrong who recently
celebrated their first anniversary with ART ST! Thank you for helping to make ART ST what it
is today!!

Art Requests
Over the last few months, we have had a run on the Request for Art!
The first was a “Law Inspired” painting that was requested by a Brisbane Barrister to hang in her office. Unfortunately, this request did not end in a sale. Thanks to Marianne Grigore, Anne Armstrong and Patty Gonzalez for participating in this challenge. They are beautiful paintings and I will be emailing them to a couple of solicitors I know as soon as Marianne returns from her holiday!
The second RFA we received was for a 3m panorama of the Brisbane River and Story Bridge. Thanks again to Marianne Grigore and Anne Armstrong who both submitted paintings. Marianne created a 180cm long one and Anne, a smaller prototype tripdych. Again, another great challenge! Congratulations Anne on your 3m commission!
The third RFA, which is currently in progress, is for another Brisbane River/Story Bridge painting. Thanks to Ros Howse,Di Cox.
Instagram & Pinterest
I have made a start on new accounts with Instagram and Pinterest and so far, we have 10 followers on Instagram and 2 on Pinterest. Limited time has meant I haven’t really spent a lot of time on this yet, but plan to do so once my exhibition is over. I was very excited to see QAGOMA like one of our images!
Look out for these badges on our website soon!

The last couple of months have passed in a blur while I try to prepare for an upcoming art exhibition "Memories of Europe" which is being held in November with fellow ART ST Artists Grazia Carrara and Catherine Marsh and look after ART ST and my web design clients!
I experienced some deja vu while preparing a project plan for our exhibition (in a former life I worked as an IT Project Manger) and I remembered that it isn't until you start listing tasks onto paper that you realise how big a project can be! There are lots of things to think about for an art exhibition including invitations, signage, promotion, artwork labels and catalogues, opening night music, catering and alcohol... not to mention actually completing the artwork and deciding on how best to display the works on the walls.
I'm just glad I have two other artists to help out with it all! Arranging solo exhibitions must be very daunting and I wonder if this is the reason lots of artists opt to hope for an invitation by a gallery to exhibit. It means there is not outlay of funds and everything is arranged for you. It does however, also mean having to pay the gallery hefty commissions on sales of art.
A lot of artists complain about commissions charged by galleries and even I was surprised to discover some galleries take up to 50%. However, I hadn't really thought about all the work involved in organising the exhibition itself. When organising the exhibition yourself, you keep the total sale price, but there are costs involved in hiring the gallery, invitations, signage, opening night catering. Also, doing it yourself, you don't really get paid for the time you spend planning and organising.
So, whether you do it yourself or are lucky enough to receive an invitation to exhibit by a gallery, it all probably works out pretty even in the end.
I am just crossing my fingers and hoping we haven't forgotten anything major and hoping I can get a few more paintings finished!
New ART ST Webpage
I have created a new page on the website “Our Art Exhibitions” where we you can see a list of all the exhibitions and competitions our ART ST Artists enter. It is great to see art on our website, but even better if you can see it "in the flesh".

by Karen Collins
I recently returned from a fabulous holiday to the UK and France. It was a great time of the year to visit these countries as all the wildflowers were blooming and providing some very inspiring images for future paintings.
My trip included a visit to the National Gallery in London and the Musee de L'Orangerie in Paris. Both were spectacular and awe inspiring. I picked up a couple of interesting books at the National Gallery and am looking forward to learning!
The National Gallery, is so large and holds so many works of art that you would need a month to do it justice! We concentrated on the 17th to early 20th century paintings. It was very interesting to see how art developed over the centuries from the 17th century soft, romantics with lots of cherubs floating around to the rough brush-stroked canvases of the Impressionists.
The Orangerie, being much smaller, was do-able in half a day (even though I could take in those gorgeous waterlines for a lifetime!)
This gallery was built in 1852 initially to house an orange grove. It was used to house soldiers on leave during World War I, then in 1927 eight huge water lily paintings where installed in two specially designed (by Monet) oval-shaped rooms in the Orangerie. The gallery enjoys lots of natural light from the ceiling which shows the effect of changing weather, seasons and hours of the day on the art. The dawn to dusk water lilies are mounted around the walls.
These Water Lilies were donated to France after the First World War. Monet was offering Parisians a haven of peace - a space between the hustle and bustle of the city and and his works.
The level below housed a fabulous exhibition - "The Jean Walter and Paul Guillaume Collection". Paul Guillaume was an art dealer and gallery owner in the early 1900's. After Paul died, his wife married Jean Walter who was an architect. This exhibition displayed a fabulous range of art by Cezanne, Renoir, Rouseau, Modigliani, Laurencin, Matisse, Picasso, Derain, Utrillo and Soutine.
In a different area on the same level was a fabulous exhibition of drawings from the Musee d'Orsay. This exhibition included works by Seurat, Moreau, Bresdin, Redon, Millet and Degas.
Our visit to the Orangerie was made even more special, having visited Monet's real water lily garden in Giverney the day before. All I will add is, if you ever get the opportunity to visit Monet's garden, do it!
New Artists @ ART ST
I would like to offer a warm welcome to Patrycja Jeleniewicz who works in oil paints and creates amazing seascapes, many with vibrant sunsets and sunrises; and Brian Isbester who creates in Acrylic. He has a range of fabulous images from Brisbane city scenes to nature to a great old car rumbling down a dirt road.

Request for Art
The “Request for Art” feature of Art St seems to be becoming more popular. Our Artists are certainly enjoying the process and the challenges!
I came up with the idea of “Request for Art [RFA]” after hearing other students say that they “... just don’t know what to paint next”. The other thing I often hear is “what sort of paintings do people want to buy?”
The “RFA” solves the "what to paint next" problem for emerging artists and also provides a way for customers to ask for a specific painting which more than one artist will create. This provides the customer with a choice of art by different artists with different styles. Also because multiple artists work on the same request, it is less stressful for the Artist than a straight commission and should give the Artist the freedom to experiment and explore an end result that may set that painting apart from the rest.
Over the last couple of months, we have received a request for a painting of jacaranda in bloom, Kangaroo Point landscape and a large black, white and silver abstract. The progress and results can be seen on our "View Requested Art" page.
A couple of these requests have been for wedding gifts! What very original and https://www.instagram.com/artstbrisbane/thoughtful gifts!
Art Sales
We have had a number of sales in March and April, including two "Requests for Art" and sales by Artists who exhibited in the Rotary Art Spectacular. The exhibition was held from 3rd to 12th April at the Riverside Centre, 123 Eagle St, Brisbane. Last year more than 35,000 people visited the exhibition which raised over $90,000 for youth-based projects and Rotary Community Projects in Brisbane.
Congratulations to Lance Boucaut, Anne Armstrong, Jakki Boucaut and Grazia Carrara for your recent sales and associated commissions!
YouTube
For several months I have been considering starting another form of social media for ART ST and after much deliberation, I have decided on YouTube. The main reason for this is that it is a great medium to display visual art, it has almost as many Australian users as Facebook (currently Facebook = 12,800,000/ YouTube = 12,000,000). The next closest was LinkedIn (3,400,000) then Twitter (2,500,000).
AND if we manage to produce something that goes viral, we will all be able to retire!

New Web pages
We have added a couple of new pages to our website:
Feedback This will contain testimonials from customers and our Artists. To date, we have received some lovely comments and feedback from our customers and we wanted to share these with you. We are currently awaiting some testimonials from our Artists and hope to have more very soon.
News This page! This is a blog which will contain interesting news about ART ST and art in general for our target audience.
Art in Brisbane
QUT recently started the "Texta Book Club" which is for people who love art. They use fiction to unpack the subjects, themes and emotions of art. It is facilitated by the QUT Creative Writing and Literary Studies. Chat about the book of the month, then have a tour of the latest exhibition. The next Book Club will be held on 27th May. This Brisbane Institute of Art's annual exhibition is open to all artists from SE Queensland and Northern NSW with a prize awarded for a 2D work including painting, drawing, printmaking and photography and offers the prize of $5,000. (My very first art class was with Paul Milburn at BIA. A lovely man who unfortunately passed away a couple of years ago. I will always recall his words of advice to me to stay "loosey goosey" as he would pick up one of my large brushes and wipe out detail that I had painstakingly spent the last hour on!)
