Portrait Artist / Streetscape Artist
About Lance and his Art
I was born in Brisbane, and loved art from an early age, and through my school years. I aspired to be an art teacher when I entered teachers’ college back in the sixties, but this didn't eventuate and I taught primary school in Queensland for 36 years! I did very little art during my working years for the usual reasons but my interest in art, and especially painting, was rekindled four years ago. During the past four years I have tried to make up for the long “drought” by painting furiously (at times- sometimes other interests call) , working with two artist groups, and showing my work at every opportunity.
The streetscapes I love to paint with vibrant colours and texture. I exaggerate the colours and use a broad-brush technique. I love to paint the quaint older houses of inner-city Brisbane - they have so much charm! Often my streetscapes feature a small figure or two to show that although the buildings may be old, they are still alive.
I love the story that a painting can tell, and the questions it can ask. What is happening? What happened before? What is the person doing, or feeling?
I am enjoying painting in watercolour, acrylic and oil media. I started painting watercolour portraits and progressed to watercolour portraits on canvass. I haven’t tried watercolour landscapes or seascapes at this stage. Probably a little too mainstream for me. I love the colours available in acrylic paints! I have only recently started to experiment with oils and have experienced the joys and frustrations that result. I paint in a loose, impressionistic style. I am not patient enough to attempt realism!
The challenge for me is knowing when to stop working on a piece – to stop at the right time!
Art Shows and Art Exhibitions
I enjoy participating in exhibitions and local art shows and have been fortunate enough to receive formal recognition of my efforts at some of these shows.
For the month of February 2018, I will be exhibiting in Brisbane's Treasury Hotel, one of Brisbane's most beautiful historic buildings. Lance's paintings can be found in their fine dining LAB Restaurant and Bar and also in Ryan's on the Park.
On 27 Feb the Treasury is holding an exclusive "Art of the Palate" event. This dinner combines an award-winning selection of wines from Penfolds accompanying a carefully curated four course meal. Meet the Artist (Lance) and the Winemaker!
Further info and tickets available at Treasury Brisbane website.
